A Legacy Of Greatness

DR. ARTHUR FURST

"FEW RELATIONSHIPS HAVE HAD SUCH A POWERFUL EFFECT ON GNLD AS OUR RELATIONSHIP WITH DR. ARTHUR FURST. WHAT AN EXAMPLE HE HAS BEEN TO EACH AND EVERY ONE OF US; WHAT A LEGACY HE HAS GIVEN US." - Jerry Brassfield.

Dr. Arthur Furst 1914-2005

Arthur Furst was born on December 25, 1914, in Chicago, Illinois. At the age of four, he lost both parents to influenza. As a result, Arthur was placed in an orphanage, where he lived until he moved to Los Angeles to live with an aunt and uncle when he was in the 5th grade.

Arthur grew up in LA and eventually attended the University of California, LA.
To make ends meet during college, he parked cars until the wee hours of the morning, and each summer he slept on the beach.

Arthur had a difficult time deciding on a major, as he excelled in both the performing arts and science. Finally choosing Chemistry, he earned his Bachelor of science degree, teaching credential, and Master of Science degree from UCLA before moving to the San Francisco Bay area.
He proceeded to teach at four different universities while working on his Ph.D. in chemistry from Stanford University.

Despite a relentless academic schedule, Arthur managed to maintain a personal life, as well.
In 1940, he married his sweetheart, Florence, and began a family that eventually included four children. Internationally regarded as a pioneer in toxicology and cancer research, Dr. Furst founded the world famous Stanford Cancer Chemotherapy Laboratory.

A pioneer in the field of cancer treatment, Dr. Furst was the first to present the idea that chemotherapy could be administered orally. He also developed the now widely understood principal that cancer patients should be treated with a combination of drugs, rather than with one drug at a time.

Dr.Arthur Furst avoided patenting any of his ideas related to cancer treatment, believing anything involving cancer treatment belonged in the public domain!

Dr. Furst was at the forefront of disease prevention science more than fifty years ago. When he originally tried to present his ground breaking finding on the correlation between diet and cancer, though, prevailing attitudes indicated he was decades too early. As a result, he began working with GNLD in 1975, using the company as an outlet for his important discoveries, and soon he founded the (SAB) Scientific Advisory Board. During his 25 years as an active member on the SAB, Dr. Furst established the "Based in Nature, Backed by Science" philosophy that has been and remains the hallmark of GNLD products around the world.

Dr. Furst belonged to more than fifteen scientific societies, authored more than 250 scientific journal articles, and was named Diplomate of the Academy of Toxicological Scientists, an honor bestowed on less than 100 people worldwide.

Over the years, many of Dr. Furst's discoveries led to groundbreaking GNLD products, and his enormous talent, energy, dedication, and vision are major reasons why year after year, GNLD has delivered such leading-edge products to fulfill genuine human needs. GNLD continues to recognize the valuable scientific contributions of passion and integrity Dr. Furst made to our ongoing product development and the rest of the world.

"Every person on planet Earth has gained from the life of this unique man," allows John Miller, Vice President of Science & Technology and longtime SAB-maye of Dr.Furst. "Every one of us is better off because he was here. All of us who make up the GNLD family he loved and care for so much for so long are blessed to have had him so close to us. He left us with a great legacy, and through us he will live forever."
